Antique Sextant by Heath & Co Ltd, London.

A fine late 19th century navigators Sextant, Royal Navy pattern 'Bell' frame design. Engraved on the arc Heath & Co Ltd, Crayford, London, S.E and also engraved with the Royal Navy Officers name W.O.H. Lambert. R.N.

The silver scale is engraved from -5  degrees to 150 degrees and can measure angles up to 136 degrees, it is divided into 10 minute increments. The index arm has swinging scale magnifier, the silver Vernier scale reads from 0 to 10 seconds of arc. 6.5 inch radius.

It is contained within its original hardwood box that has a patent push button release mechanism and brass carry handle. It is also complete with all its accessories - three telescopes, one spare eyepiece, two eyepiece sun filters, screwdriver, mirror adjusting tool  and key to the box lock. This example also has a rare HEATHS Patent greatest angle clamp.

Walter Odwin Hutton Lambert was born in June 1887, he started his Royal Navy career in May 1902. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in Sept 1908. In 1912 Lambert qualified in Torpedo gunnery and navigation and in 1913 he invented the 'Lamberts attack director'. In May 1913 Lambert was appointed in command of the first class torpedo boat T.B. 33. In 1915 he was appointed in command of the destroyer H.M.S RACOON. On the 15th September 1915 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
