ANTIQUE SEXTANT / QUINTANT No.18

A rare antique Quintant / Sextant made by Crichton, London.

A Quintant is similar to the more common and better known sextant and used in the same way.

A fine early to mid 19th century navigators ladder frame design Quintant, engraved on the arc Crichton, London.

The silver scale is engraved from -5  degrees to 165 degrees and it can measure angles to 144 degrees, it is divided into 10 minute increments. The index arm has swinging scale magnifier and the silver Vernier scale reads from 0 to 10 seconds of arc.

Radius: 6 inches.

This antique Quintant / Sextant is in superb condition and contained within its original hardwood box with brass carry handle. It comes complete with all its accessories - Four telescopes, spare eye piece, telescope sun filter and mirror adjusting tool. This Quintant has also had an upgrade with the more modern wide angle telescope by Lilley & Son.

The Directory of British Instrument Makers 1550 - 1851 by Gloria Clifton, lists John Crichton as making nautical  instruments in London between 1831 and 1865 .
