A Quintant is similar to the more common and better known sextant and used in the same way.
A fine mid 19th century navigators Quintant, engraved on the arc L. Casella, Maker to the Admiralty & Ordnance, London. No 1718.
The silver scale is engraved from -5 degrees to 175 degrees and can measure angles to 142 degrees, it is divided into 10 minute increments. The index arm has swinging scale magnifier with glass light diffuser and the silver Vernier scale reads from 0 to 10 seconds of arc. 6 inch radius.

This antique Quintant / Sextant is in exceptional condition and is contained within its original hardwood box with brass carry handle. It comes complete with all its accessories - Four telescopes ( one with rack and pinion focussing & spare eye piece ) 2 x telescope sun filters, adjusting pin and this example even has the key to the box which is rare.
