Antique Sextant made by Smith, Aberdeen.
A fine early to mid 19th century navigators Sextant, brass frame with a rare triangle frame design. Engraved on the arc Smith, Aberdeen.
The silver scale is engraved from -5 degrees to 155 degrees and can measure angles up to 138 degrees, it is divided into 10 minute increments. The index arm has swinging scale magnifier, the silver Vernier scale reads from 0 to 10 seconds of arc. 8 inch radius.
This antique Sextant is contained within its original keystone shaped hardwood box. It comes complete with all its accessories - three telescopes, one eye piece sun filter and mirror adjusting tool.
This antique Sextant can be dated fairly accurateley because Charles Smith is recorded as working from several addresses in Aberdeen from 1843 to 1851.
